Perry downs Selby to claim Yixing title
Joe Perry defeated world number two Mark Selby 4-1 to win the AT1 event in Yixing, China.
The world number 24 took home a top prize of £10,000 with his first professional title since the 2008 Championship League, which also denied Selby the chance to reclaim top spot in the rankings from Neil Robertson.
The Australian leapfrogged ‘The Jester From Leicester’ when he reached the finals of the Bulgarian Open last week, where he lost to John Higgins.
Perry surged into a 3-0 lead with breaks of 70 and 69 before getting over the finish line in frame five, dropping just one frame to the UK Championship and Masters champion.
Winning the final warm-up before the Wuxi Classic next week, also in China, will serve as a huge boost for Perry’s hopes of a strong run in the first ranking event of the 2013/14 season.
It also guarantees him a spot in the 2014 PTC Grand Finals as one of the top eight players in the Asian Tour Order of Merit.
