John Higgins was the standout performer on day one of the Australian Goldfields Open in Bendigo.

The four-times world champion saw off Tom Ford 5-3 in his opening match, coming back from 3-2 down to secure an impressive - and gutsy - victory.

Higgins next meets Liang Wenbo, the Chinese having beaten Robert Milkens by the same scoreline.

It was a day to forget for Mark Allen though, the Northern Irishman falling at the first hurdle to Fergal O'Brien. O'Brien found himself two frames down before he rallied to take all five of the next frames, hitting a break of 103 along the way, and book a place in the second round.

Andrew Higginson downed Australian wild card Matthew Bolton 5-0 and now takes on home hero Neil Robertson on Wednesday evening. Robertson has never won the Goldfields Open title, but comes into this year's tournament in good form, having picked up the Wuxi Classic title in China at the weekend.
