Highlights

90+4'

It's all over, Switzerland are heading to their fourth consecutive World Cup and Northern Ireland's journey ends here. On balance, Switzerland were definitely the better side, but the visitors have a right to feel embittered by the first-leg penalty controversy.

90+4'

Rodriguez's free kick lands comfortably in McGovern's hands. A poor free kick.

90+3'

Embolo wins a free kick from Evans on the edge of the area. The pitch is in atrocious condition now.

90+2'

Rodriguez's instinctive clearance has kept Switzerland's World Cup dream alive. Incredible.

90+1'

CHANCE: Davis forces a corner as we move into the first of four minutes of injury time. Brunt crosses in and Evans sees his header cleared off the line by Rodriguez!

90'

Embolo is presented with space on the edge of the area for another shot, but he blasts wide.

89'

CHANCE: Embolo turns Evans in the box in superb fashion and shoots at goal from the left. McGovern pushes it wide for a corner. Embolo has looked extremely dangerous since coming on.

88'

CHANCE: Embolo breaks down the left and threads a ball back to Mehmedi on the edge of the area. He just has to put the ball in an empty net but he misses entirely!

87'

If Seferovic had taken just one of the many chances he has been presented tonight, his ovation as he left the pitch would have been significantly louder.

86'

SUB: Embolo is on for Seferovic.

85'

CHANCE: It's four vs. two as Zakaria breaks forward. He passes to Seferovic, who blasts it over the bar. A huge waste of a chance to finish it from Switzerland.

84'

Rodriguez breaks down the left, but his attempted pass to Seferovic is unsuccessful.

82'

SUB: Washington is replaced by McNair.

82'

Northern Ireland have around eight minutes of regular time to salvage their World Cup dream.

80'

SUB: Freuler replaces Shaqiri.

79'

Shaqiri's free kick is cleared as far as Zuber, but the visitors clear the danger.

78'

Jonny Evans is cautioned for attempting to stop the ball with his hand. Free kick from 35 yards...

77'

The TV replays have shown Lichsteiner requesting a small, airplane-liquor-sized bottle from the sidelines, which he guzzled down. An energy drink, presumably.

77'

Shaqiri sends in an inswigning corner to the near post, where Seferovic flicks the ball straight into the side netting.

74'

SUB: Magennis and Jones replace Norwood and Ward.

74'
72'

YELLOW CARD: Seferovic is booked for playing on after being called offside.

71'

Zuber breaks down the left channel and tries to pick out Seferovic with a cross, but the cross sails several feet over the striker's head.

71'

Northern Ireland are enjoying a fine spell of form at the moment. Switzerland has ceased to look threatening going forward.

68'

After the referee intervenes in a fracas in the box, Washington's corner comes in, but doesn't find any visiting player.

67'

Dallas breaks free on the left of the area and forces a corner from Akanji. Davis' ball in from the corner is cleared for another...

67'

Some encouragement for the visitors...

64'

Dallas outs in a cross from the left in an attempt to pick out Washington, but Sommer collects.

63'

Washington has been a much bigger threat going forward than Kyle Lafferty was in the first leg. And Saville's range of passing is excellent. Two great changes for this game.

62'

CHANCE: Washington breaks on the left flank, beating two defenders before picking out Saville on the edge of the area. His shot is collected by Sommer.

61'

SUB: In the first change of the game, Džemaili makes way for Mehmedi.

59'

Rodriguez cross from the left to find Shaqiri on the opposite flank (as there's no one in the middle). He passes to Zuber in the box but the ball is intercepted and the danger cleared.

54'

CHANCE: Northern Ireland break with Saville on the right. He puts in a cross to former postman Washington, whose header sails narrowly wide. A great chance for the visitors to get back in this one.

54'
52'

Northern Ireland look a lot better than the first leg, but they need to offer much more going forward to stand a chance of keeping the Swiss out of the World Cup.

49'

CHANCE: Rodriguez has a 25-yard left-footed shot across the face of goal which sails a few yards wide. The Swiss are knocking on the door again.

49'

Džemaili pierces open the Northern Irish defence with a through-ball to Seferovic, but Hughes intercepts.

48'

Dallas has a speculative shot from the edge of the area, which Sommer easily collects.

47'

CHANCE: Lichsteiner passes the ball across the visitors' box to find Zuber in an absurd amount of space. He takes too many touches and sees his shot blocked.

46'

Northern Ireland kick off the second half, needing to find the net to stand a chance of making it to Russia next summer.

45+1'

Brunt's poor effort is virtually the last kick of the half. The pitch needs one heck of a pitchforking during the interval.

45+1'

Northenr Ireland win a free kick on the edge of the box after a nasty challenge from Schar on Ward. Brunt shoots from around 25 yards but blasts it high over the bar. He looks down at the ground as if it was the fault of the grass.

45'

Zuber tries to put Seferovic through on goal with an incisive pass straight through the middle, but McGovern collects.

43'

CHANCE: Džemaili, Zuber and Xhaka play a beautiful three-pass movement on the edge of the area, releasing Xhaka for a shot, which he puts wide. But he was offside, anyway. Regardless, it was the prettiest thing we've seen on this ugly pitch tonight.

40'

Switzerland break and Seferovic picks out Shaqiri's advance on the right, but the linesman puts up his flag.

40'

Dallas wins a free kick after being manhandled by Rodriguez near the centre circle. Norwood swings it into the box but the Swiss win it back.

39'

Another lull. As it stands, Switzerland are on their way to their fourth consecutive World Cup, courtesy of Ricardo Rodriguez's controversial first-leg penalty.

34'

With the amount of space Northern Ireland are giving the Swiss wide man, combined with their reticence to mark Seferovic in the box, it seems like a goal is coming soon.

31'

Zuber charges into the box from the left and tries to open up his body to place the ball to the right of the goal. He ends up shooting embarrassingly wide.

28'

CHANCE: Seferovic lays off to Zuber from the edge of the area, who shoots directly at the 'keeper. Corner.

27'

At the other end, Dallas cuts in from the right and tries to deliver a cross, but he finds no one.

27'

Shaqiri delivers a cross from the right but Seferovic fails to properly connect once again. The Swiss are still finding it easy to get the crosses in.

26'

CHANCE: Shaqiri charges into the box from the right and cuts onto his left foot, Robben-style. His powerful shot is deflected for a corner.

25'

The tempo has slowed a little. The pitch is giving this one a bit of a Sunday League vibe.

23'

CHANCE: Zuber picks out Seferovic in the area with a lovely, low cross from the left that splits the two centre-backs. Seferovic shoots into the side netting.

21'

The pitch is cutting up very badly. Parts of the middle third are starting to resemble a ploughed field.

20'

Zuber send Hughes to the shops for a pint of milk with a superb dummy near the halfway line! Northern Ireland certainly look more adventurous in this leg, though.

18'

Zuber puts in a dangerous curling, los cross but no one is there to connect. The Swiss wide men are finding it very easy to get enough space to deliver crosses.

15'

CHANCE: Evans tees up Brunt for another long-shot from around 30 yards. It's hit hard, but Sommer collects comfortably.

15'

Rodriguez finds himself in vast swathes of space on the left and tries to pick out Seferovic in the box. The danger is cleared.

14'

Zuber picks out Shaqiri on the edge of the area with a great cross-field pass. Shaqiri's subsequent shot is blocked.

12'

Ward tries to break from the corner but Lichtsteiner puts in an excellent last-gasp tackle near the centre circle.

12'

Xhaka tries to pick out Rodriguez in the box but Hughes clumsily clears for a corner.

10'

Džemaili tries to pick out Seferović in the six yard box but McAuley intercepts for a corner.

9'

Northern Ireland's last goal in Switzerland was scored by George Best, 53 years ago.

8'

Shaqiri swings in the free kick but it fails to connect with any of Switzerland's six players in the area. Danger cleared.

7'

BOOKING: Brunt brings down Shaqiri as he charges down the right flank and sees yellow for his troubles. Free kick.

5'

CHANCE: Shaqiri swings in a pacey cross and Seferović heads just wide from the edge of the six-yard box. The No. 9 should have put that on target.

5'

Brunt's shot was Northern Ireland's first on target in the entire play-off.

4'

CHANCE: After a melee fromt he corner, Dallas shoots from outside the box, but his effort goes wide.

3'

CHANCE: Chris Brunt takes a long-shot from 20 yards which is pushed away for a corner by Sommer.

3'

With the field in this condition, playing directly and getting balls in over the top should be the order of the day for the visitors.

2'

Debutant George Saville pushes forward but Sommer clears the danger. The playing surface looks terrible.

1'

German referee Felix Brych gets the party started as the hosts kick off.

16.59

The visitors are aiming to reach back-to-back tournaments for the first time, having featured at Euro 2016. If successful, this will be Northern Ireland's first World Cup appearance since 1986.

16.58

Don't expect a flood of goals in this one: Northern Ireland’s last 19 games only saw both teams score on one occasion (the 3-1 defeat to Germany in October).

16.57

The teams are belting out the national anthems at the sell-out 37,000-capacity St Jakob-Park in Basel. There appears to be a respite from the rain.

16.56

Reminder: qualification is a pretty tall order for Northern Ireland tonight.

16.55

Pre-match comment from Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill: "We'll have to play better than we did at home, we'll have to play higher up the pitch and make the most of our opportunities. Our intention is to stay in the game as long as possible. There is a highly motivated bunch of players in the dressing room - they know this is a huge opportunity in their careers. We'll have to be at our best."

16.50

Bad news for the visitors: no team has ever qualified for the World Cup after losing at home in the first leg of a play-off tie.

16.45

Millwall's George Saville gets his first international start tonight, while Aaron Hughes is in line for his 109th cap, surpassing Sir Bobby Moore as the most-capped home nations defender of all time.

16.40

Two separate pitch inspections have been held at St Jakob-Park. After walking around for a bit and throwing a ball on the grass to see how well it bounces, the German referee Felix Brych has given the all-clear to proceed.

16.35

Switzerland have also won their last nine competitive games at home. Northern Ireland have won just two of their last eight qualifiers on the road, and those were against San Marino and Azerbaijan.

16.30

Switzerland have won 13 of their last 14 World Cup qualifiers, dating back to September 2013. Their only loss came at the hands of Portugal last month - a result that denied Vladimir Petković's side automatic qualification.

16.25

Clearly, the spirits of the travelling fans have not been dampened by the weather.

16.20

There has been heavy rain at FC Basel's St Jakob-Park, but the pitch has passed inspection. The last time the Green and White army played in the wet, they managed a 2-0 win over Ukraine at Euro 2016...

16.15

SWITZERLAND: Sommer, Liechtensteiner, Schar, Akanji, Rodriquez, Zakaria, Xhaka, Zuber, Dzemaili, Shaqiri, Seferovic. Subs: Burkl, Hitz, Lacroix, Elvedi, Lang, Embolo, Freuler, Behrami, G Fernandes, Mehmedi, Gavranovic, E Fernandes. /// NORTHERN IRELAND: McGovern, Hughes, J. Evans, McAuley, Brunt, Davis, Saville, Norwood, Dallas, Ward, Washington. Subs: Mannus, Carroll, McLaughlin, Ferguson, Hodson, Jones, Lafferty, Paton, Lund, McNair, Magennis, McArdle.

16.10

Northern Ireland have made a few changes, notably bringing in Conor Washington and sending Kyle Lafferty to the bench. Corry Evans is unavailable after picking up the controversial yellow card at WIndsor Park.

16.05

Switzerland will start with the same XI that earned a controversial 1-0 win in Belfast on Thursday. Premier League stars Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka will both feature, but the danger man might be Borussia Monchengladbach's Denis Zakaria, who was superb in the first leg.
