FT: Southampton 0-2 Liverpool. First-half goals from Firmino and Salah see Liverpool move back up to third as van Dijk wins - and helps his new club keep a clean sheet - on his return to St Mary's. Southampton end the weekend in the drop zone in 18th spot.
YNWA belting out around St. Mary's.
Four minutes added.
- OffMohamed SalahLiverpool
- OnDejan LovrenLiverpool
LIVERPOOL CHANGE: Lovren on for Salah.
A penny for Pellegrino's thoughts. Southampton very much in a relegation scrap and without a home win since November....
CLOSE! Lallana exchanges a nice one-two with Salah but can't quite find the far corner with his low effort form the right of the box.
Southampton haven't looked at all likely in this second half, but a goal now would make it an interesting finale.
Liverpool look set to make it just one loss in 18 matches. A win will mean they have taken 41 points from 54 available.
Liverpool will soon start thinking about the Champions League clash with Porto in midweek.
- OffOriol RomeuSouthampton
- OnSteven DavisSouthampton
SAINTS CHANGE: Romeu off, Davis on.
Remember, as it stands, Liverpool will return to third. Southampton will end the weekend in the bottom three.
- OffRoberto FirminoLiverpool
- OnAdam LallanaLiverpool
LIVERPOOL CHANGE: Ex-Saint Lallana comes on for Firmino.
Firmino has a crack from 20 yards - but it's blocked. Liverpool should have wrapped this up in the last 10 minutes or so.
Wijnaldum opts to join the Liverpool attack on the left wing. He's given the biggest boo of the day and then there are cheers of relief as the home side get it off him and clear. A goal from him would be hard to take.
Another Liverpool chance goes begging. Wijnaldum steps over a clever through pass, but Mane can only fire wide of the near post.
Almost three. Mane drives forward at pace. He's allowed to get to the edge of the box, but sees his low effort well blocked. Robertson picks up the loose ball and crashes a drive against another Saints body before the hosts finally get it to safety.
Salah shows his pace as he chases down a ball deep in Saints territory, but McCarthy stays cool and beats the Liverpool forward to it before clearing his lines.
- OffJames Ward-ProwseSouthampton
- OnShane LongSouthampton
SAINTS CHANGE: Long on for Ward Prowse.
CLOSE! Firmino sees a low drive from 15 yards well saved after a probing run and pass from Mane. Salah races onto the rebound but fizzes into the side netting from a narrowing angle.
What a left peg!
Boufal finds space on the left. He jinks beyond Alexander-Arnold but can't get past Matip.Saints struggling for ideas in the final third now.
Can lashes over the top from long range after Mane had come very close to meeting Milner's cross from the left.
Boos for van Dijk as he makes an important interception to deny Ward Prowse through the middle.
STAT: Liverpool have scored at least twice in 11 of the last 12 games in all competitions.
Salah tees up Wijnaldum who rifles over the top from 20 yards out.
- Yellow cardOriol RomeuSouthampton
Romeu booked for catching Milner late.
- OffAlex Oxlade-ChamberlainLiverpool
- OnJames MilnerLiverpool
LIVERPOOL CHANGE: Milner on for the Ox.
CLOSE! Hoedt stabs wide at the near post after making a clever run onto Ward Prowse's fizzing free kick from the left.
Tadic spins Alexander-Arnold and wins a cheap free kick in a good position on the left by the corner flag.
- OffMario LeminaSouthampton
- OnSofiane BoufalSouthampton
SOUTHAMPTON CHANGE: Lemina off, Boufal on.
It's been low key since the break. Just what Liverpool want, but not what the Saints need.
Liverpool enjoying more of the ball at the start of this half. Klopp no doubt asking his players to control the game more in this period.
Tadic jinks down the left. He is well marshalled by Alexander-Arnold who stays with him all the way to the byline before winning a goal kick for the visitors. Solid defending form the youngster.
Half chance for Salah. Mane's acrobatic attempt fails and it drops to the Egyptian who can only fire just over from 18 yards out.
Play halted as Lemina receives treatment. Suggestion is he is feeling unwell.
Liverpool comfortably deal with the resulting free kick directed into their penalty area. The visitors have had their troubles seeing out big leads at times this term - will they manage this game better from here?

KICK OFF! Liverpool restart the contest.
- End of 1st Half
HT: Southampton 0-2 Liverpool. Firmino's 20th and Salah's 29th of the season at the start and finish of the half has put the visitors in control.
One minute added.
Credit to Firmino for the sublime back heel return pass for Salah to slot home.
That was Salah's 29th of the season and his 22nd in the league.
- GoalMohamed SalahLiverpool
GOAL! Salah with a simple low finish after a lovely one-two with Firmino had unlocked the Saints defence.
Højbjerg with a super sliding challenge to block Wijnaldum as he got set to pull the trigger from 20 yards.
Ward Prowse is left unmarked at the far post once more, but he can only guide a weak header at Karius from Bertrand's superb cross.
Southampton will feel disappointed to be behind at this point. Since conceding in the sixth minute they've been on top.
Ward Prowse curves the resulting set piece into the area, but it swings too close to Karius who plucks it out of the air.
- Yellow cardJoel MatipLiverpool
Matip booked for getting too tight to Tadic.
Southampton earn their third corner of the match. Liverpool make a real meal of it and are rescued by the sight of the assistant's flag. Matip let it bounce and van Dijk looked hugely concerned as he tried to clear with three Saints players around him.
As it stands, Southampton will remain in the dropzone in 18th spot, once point adrift of safety. Liverpool will return to third place, two points above Spurs and just two behind Man United in second.
A slick Liverpool move sees Firmino find the overlapping run of Robertson. The full back wastes little time drilling a low ball into the six-yard box, but there is no orange shirt in sight to provide what would have been a simple finish.
Mane takes Wijnaldum's forward pass in his stride but can only poke wide from 20 yards under pressure from Cedric.
STAT: Southampton haven't lost in their last three home matches against Liverpool in all competitions.
Karius has made an impressive start to the game for Liverpool this evening.
More danger for Liverpool. Ward Prowse meets Tadic's cross from the left but sees his header well tipped over the top by Karius.
Guido Carrillo meets Ward Prowse's devilish delivery from the right with a firm header, but it's too close to Karius.
Mane turns well onto a pass from Robertson but lashes a 25-yard drive off target.
Stephens challenges Firmino in the area. He has his hands on the Brazilian who goes to ground theatrically. The referee waves away the appeal, but it was certainly risky from the Saints defender.
STAT: Saints have only won on three occasions at home in the league this term against West Brom, West Ham and Everton.
POSSESSION: Saints 60 per cent - Liverpool 40 per cent.
A comedy moment from Firmino. Hoedt clears Robertson's searching cross towards the left byline. The Brazilian chases and should leave it for a corner, but stumbles attempting to trap it, kicks it against the flag and out for a goal kick. Needless to say, the Saints fans enjoy the moment!
Southampton have been the more adventurous. Liverpool seemingly content to allow them to attack and then counter at pace.
SUPER SAVE! Karius comes to Liverpool's rescue. Højbjerg held off Robertson to collect Romeu's angled pass and lash a close range shot at goal that the stopper brilliantly blocked.
PHOTO: Firmino's fine finish.
Stephens picks up a loose ball 35 yards out and powers forward before lashing well wide of Karius' right-hand post.
Southampton have reacted well to going behind, but have so far lacked quality in the attacking third.
Boos for van Dijk every time he touches the ball. Not exactly unexpected!
Wijnaldum bursts into the box from deep but can't quite latch onto a probing high ball from Alexander-Arnold.
The Ox engineers some space on the left but fires in a tame shot from the edge of the box that Alex McCarthy is equal to.
That was Firmino's 20th in all competitions and his 12th in the league. He now has 13 in his last 15 starts.
- GoalRoberto FirminoLiverpool
GOAL! Firmino fires a clinical finish into the bottom corner after Salah seized upon a big error from Hoedt and rolled it into the Brazilian's path.
Pierre-Emile Højbjerg somehow wins a corner off Andrew Robertson, who tried but failed to let the ball run out next to the left byline. Fortunately for the left box, Liverpool repel the first delivery, with van Dijk mopping up the second with a smart header back to Karius.
KLOPP v SAINTS: The German boss has won just two and lost three of his eight matches versus the Saints.
Wesley Hoedt caught in possession by a terrible pass just outside his own box. Roberto Firmino latches onto it but tumbles far too easily. Play on, says the referee.
An early Liverpool corner from the right comes to nothing amidst the boos from the home crowd. Three former Saints have started for Liverpool this afternoon.
In contrast, Liverpool have lost just one of their last 17 league matches and have taken 38 points from 51 available. The odds seem stacked in the Merseysiders' favour, but they were when they lost that one game at Swansea a few weeks ago.
Southampton claimed a first victory in 13 at West Brom last week, but have not won a PL match at home since November. If they fail to triumph today they will equal their PL record of seven home matches without a win. If they do pull off the victory it would be the first time they have achieved back-to-back league successes since April 2017.
- 1st Half
KICK OFF! Southampton get us underway. Liverpool are wearing their orange third kit.
JACK'S THE LAD: Jack Stephens has notched in his last three Southampton appearances after failing to get on the scoresheet in his first 38 outings.
Bad news for Southampton fans. Huddersfield's 4-1 win over Bournemouth coupled with Newcastle's surprise 1-0 success over Manchester United means the Saints start this game in 18th place.
DID YOU KNOW? The last Southampton player to score against Liverpool was Sadio Mane, back in March 2016. The Reds haven't conceded in their last three PL matches versus the Saints, but have won just one of the last six meetings in all competitions.
League head-to-head at Southampton: Liverpool 13 wins, Saints 19 wins, draws 10.
Mauricio Pellegrino: "Liverpool is a huge possibility for us but a really tough side. We want to learn and we want to improve from our experience away and we have to improve in different aspects in the way we play. Hopefully we feel at the end of the game that we are growing and we are continuing with this feeling."
As for the hosts, they make one chance from the 3-2 win at West Brom. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg replaces Sofiane Boufal.
Klopp has made three changes for Liverpool with Joel Matip, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Georginio Wijnaldum coming into the side. That means skipper Jordan Henderson has been left out ahead of the Champions League clash at Porto in midweek. Klopp explained his decision to the club's official website. He said: “He’s (Henderson) not injured but he gets a rest, I decided. He can do it today. It was hard to decide but it gives him the opportunity to make a real session instead of sitting on the bench today, because of the situation with Emre on Wednesday, that’s the truth.”

Hello and welcome to LIVE updates of the Premier League clash between Southampton and Liverpool. The match sees Virgil van Dijk return to St Mary's for the first time since he made his protracted move to Merseyside in January. Jurgen Klopp's men will be hoping to pick up a win which would see them move back above third-placed Tottenham, while the Saints are just a point above the drop zone and need a victory to maintain their recent good form. Kick off 16.30 GMT.
