Liverpool on the break once more. Mane plays in Firmino on the right. He's got Lallana in the middle but opts to fizz wide of the near post. Wasteful.

WHAT A MISS! Lallana somehow fails to connect with a simply volley six yards out after Wijnaldum and Firmino had wonderfully carved City open.

De Bruyne's woodwork stats!

Mane threatens for Liverpool but then dallies on the edge of the box and City will come again.

ill we have a winner here? City pressing, but Liverpool are still dangerous on the break.

OFF THE POST! Aguero surges free of two challenges and plays in Sane on the left of the area. The youngster back heels it back into his path. Aguero stumbles trying to get the shot off. .. it falls for De Bruyne who sees his effort hit the woodwork.

DID YOU KNOW? Aguero has scored 10+ goals in all six of his Premier League seasons. No player has scored 10+ goals in every season they have played in as often as the Argentine - the next highest is Eric Cantona, who scored 10+ goals in all five of his Premier League seasons as a player.

Liverpool threatening a second. You get the feeling they will need it. City will come again in this match.

SAVE! Coutinho slips Firmino through. He races clear into the area but sees his low shot brilliantly saved by Caballero.

So much pressure on City's attack to deliver when the defence is so leaky.

Was there any doubt Milner would convert?

Silva tries to wriggle between two in the Liverpool area. He can't quite get on the end of his own prod through and the danger passes for the away side.

More Milly stats.

Liverpool have been much sharper so far in this half. City still shrugging off that penalty decision it seems.

Stones meets it but nods wide. It's a free header and he should have scored.

City looking to respond now. Corner on the right.

Clichy covers to mop up the danger after Mane had threatened to rampage beyond Otamendi.

Is Mane Liverpool's biggest threat? He has had a hand in four goals in his last three Premier League appearances against the Citizens (three goals, one assist), including a hat-trick for Southampton in May 2016.

Liverpool forward Sadio Mane had a meeting with Jurgen Klopp when was he was in charge of Borussia Dortmund

Lallana glides down the right and cuts it back for Mane who sees his shot from the edge of the box deflect over the top.

Will we see goals in this period? The first half seemed to have everything else. Penalty shouts, possible red cards, missed chances...

HT: Man City 0-0 Liverpool. A lively first 45 comes to an end. City bossed it early on and have had the best openings with Sterling and Fernandinho somehow failing to tuck home from close range. Liverpool grew as it wore on with Mane, Lallana and Firmino threatening.

City will wonder how they didn't score a few minutes ago. Somehow Sterling missed from three yards. Milner challenged him. Did he catch the winger? Should City have had a penalty?

Liverpool looking to make the most of the reprieve...

De Bruyne cuts through Liverpool's defence with a lovely ball to Silva on the left of the area. The Spaniard drills a low ball into the middle that Sterling somehow misses. It falls for Fernandinho at the far post, who inexplicably stabs into the side netting on the stretch.

It's been more about graft than guile so far.

Manchester City's David Silva takes a shot against Liverpool

For all of the talk about how this would be a match of all out attack, we've yet to have one shot on target!

Matip rises to meet Milner's right-wing free kick but can't guide his header on target at the back post.

Both defences have been creaking...

Coutinho is found by Wijnaldum on the left of the area. He cuts in on his right foot past Fernandinho but flashes his curling shot over the bar.

DID YOU KNOW? A win would see Liverpool become the first team to clock up a league double over a side managed by Pep.

PHOTO: Sterling challenges Milner.

Milner marauds to the byline but sees his deep cross easily headed clear. Liverpool have grown into the half.

Clyne manages to get his body in front of Sane to stop the forward in his tracks. He wins a free kick, but has been up against it in this half. Sane knows he has the beating of the Reds full back.

Strong defending by Otamendi. He rises well to firmly head clear and catches Matip in the process. The Reds defender needs some treatment.

A certain German who played for both is enjoying the show so far.

Milner with some composed defending at the back post after more lovely combination play had seen Sane get free and deliver another testing, low cross from the left.

Mane spins onto a loose ball in the left channel. He wins the sprint race with Otamendi but can't beat the advancing Caballero. Fair play to the City defender, he did enough to stay with Mane and put him off at the vital moment.

Caballero flaps at a left-wing cross.... it falls for Mane who sees his low drive blocked. Let off for the City keeper.

That was a nasty challenge from Toure. Dangerous. On another day it could have been red.

You've got to be thick-skinned to be an official....

A woeful delivery from the Brazilian as it hits the first man. City easily clear.

Fernandinho fizzes a low ball into the six-yard box that gets a big 'oooh' from the crowd. Aguero had tried to get on the end of it but was being closely monitored by Matip. City want a spot kick, but that would be a generous award.

The hosts surge forward once more. Silva feeds Sterling who can't get it beyond the defender with his low ball towards Aguero.

Liverpool deal with the left-wing corner efficiently. No doubt that the home side are looking the more likely here.

De Bruyne's venomous cross from the left almost catches Mignolet out at his near post. The Reds stopper is forced to scamper and push it away for a corner.

Can hauls back his man and is lucky to escape without picking up an early caution.

Klopp will be calling for his side to get hold of the ball and nullify City's momentum.

Liverpool deal with the second set piece more convincingly. The hosts are on top in a lively opening.

City looking menacing. A corner is only cleared. De Bruyne volleys it right back into the mix, but Matip does well to steer it behind.

DID YOU KNOW? Man City’s next Premier League home win will be their 200th in the competition, becoming the 8th team to reach this milestone. 158 of those 199 wins have come at the Etihad, 41 at Maine Road.

Sane sprints free on the left of the area. He fizzes a low ball into the area that Mignolet manages to get fingers to. t was a smart City move involving De Bruyne and Aguero, but the danger was brief for the visitors as Sane was flagged offside.

GOALS EXPECTED: Manchester City have failed to keep a clean sheet in each of their last 12 games in all competitions against Liverpool, shipping 23 in the process (W2 D4 L6).

At the Etihad Stadium, the Merseysiders have recorded three wins and five draws. They have been beaten on five occasions. Last season the Reds clocked up a first league win versus the Citizens in seven visits.

A couple of landmarks on both teams this evening. James Milner plays the 450th league game of his career while John Stones makes his 100th PL appearance, while it's game No.400 in league football for David Silva too.

Raheem Sterling in action with Liverpool's James Milner and Adam Lallana

City roar out of the traps. Sterling surges towards the visiting area before feeding Fernandinho on the right. The Brazilian drills a low ball towards Aguero, but Klavan is well placed to clear.

  • 1st Half

KICK OFF! Liverpool get us underway.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their nine games against sides currently in the top six of the Premier League table this season (W5 D4 L0).

Elsewhere this afternoon, Manchester United won at Middlesbrough to move up to fifth... And Tottenham have just defeated Southampton to consolidate second spot and cut Chelsea's lead at the top to 10 points.

Tottenham's Dele Alli celebrates scoring their second goal with Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama

It's going to be frenetic: These two sides have averaged the most distance run in the Premier League this season: Liverpool (117.3km per game) and Manchester City (114.8km per game).

And what about Liverpool? Their high pressing game may be ideal for this afternoon's encounter. The pre-match focus is on the return of Firmino, but it's another Brazilian who likes fixtures between these sides. Philippe Coutinho has scored more Premier League goals versus Manchester City than against any other team (4) in the competition.

Liverpool's Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho (L) vies with Manchester City's French defender Bacary Sagna (R) during the English League Cup final football match between Liverpool and Manchester City at Wembley Stadium in London on February 28, 2016.

Thoughts on first scorer? If you think the hosts will make the breakthrough, you'd be wise to look towards Sergio Aguero. The Argentine forward has found the back of the net in all four of his Premier League games versus Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium (four goals).

Manchester City's Sergio Aguero has a shot saved by Liverpool's Simon Mignolet

STAT: Manchester City have lost five of their last six Premier League meetings with Liverpool (W1). Indeed, Liverpool have won four consecutive league games against Man City for the first time since 1981 (a run of seven).

Klopp on Guardiola: "I am not in doubt about his [Guardiola's] quality. Maybe a few people are but I am not. I respect him a lot. I know probably a few people think (differently) now they are out of the Champions League but I think the way they played was quite impressive at Monaco. City could have won the game easily in the second half but because they are human beings they missed a few chances. For me City is the most difficult team to play. I know their image at this moment in this country is a little bit different."

Klopp & Guardiola

PREVIOUSLY: Liverpool beat the Citizens 1-0 at Anfield on New Year's Eve thanks to Gini Wijnaldum's header. The Reds also did the double over City last season, but lost on penalties in the League Cup final.
