Captain fantastic Wayne Rooney produces 96th-minute heroics to win MLS thriller
Wayne Rooney did something very, very special for D.C. United on Sunday night.
To set the scene, the clock had just ticked over into the 96th-minute against Orlando City, with the score at 2-2, when a set-piece was cleared and Orlando launched a break.
The DC United goalkeeper had gone up for the corner, leaving the net unguarded and Wayne Rooney as the lone man chasing down the break.
It didn't look good for the Black-and-Red...
... but then they found out just how special Wayne Rooney really is.
That was sensational on two counts.
First the defensive work, which evoked memories of Rooney of old:
" Look who's running hard after it defensively, Wayne Rooney, the net is empty... Big collision, by the captain - that is an unbelievable effort."
And then the match-winning Beckham-esque delivery to set up the goal:
" Rooney... putting one up..."
