Barcelona held to Getafe stalemate
La Liga, Camp Nou - Barcelona 0 Getafe 0
Barcelona were held to a frustrating goalless draw at home to Getafe, failing to score in a La Liga match for the first time this season.
Ernesto Valverde made a number of changes to his starting lineup, with Philippe Coutinho and Paco Alcacer coming into the side. There were also places for Yerry Mina and Lucas Digne at centre back due to Gerard Pique’s injury and Samuel Umtiti’s suspension.
Getafe rarely threatened themselves, but were well-organised throughout and deserved their point. The result means that Barca are now seven points clear of Atletico Madrid at the top of La Liga, and 17 points ahead of Real Madrid. They still probably won’t lose any sleep over this.
TALKING POINT - Is Ousmane Dembele up to Barcelona’s standard?
He was only on the pitch for 25 minutes, but Dembele did little to stake a claim for a starting spot in that time. In fact, the young Frenchman bore the brunt of the fans’ frustration, allowing a number of Barcelona attacking moves to break down with loose touches. It must be said that Dembele looked out of his depth and questions over his quality are starting to surface. Is he up to Barca’s standards?
MAN OF THE MATCH - Vicente Guaita (Getafe)
The Getafe goalkeeper has already struck a pre-contract agreement to join Crystal Palace at the end of the season, and this performance showed why he has admirers in the Premier League. Guaita might have protected by a well-organised and determined defensive line, but whenever Barcelona broke through he was on hand to make the stop. It’s not easy to keep the likes of Coutinho, Messi and Suarez at bay.
19’ NO PENALTY! Messi believes that he has been barged off the ball as he attempted to get on the end of a through ball, but the referee shakes his head. He might have had a case.
39’ GETAFE CHANCE! Mina is left one on one with Angel. The Colombian stands up and forces the Getafe man to take the shot from outside the box. It's deflected wide of the far post.
44’ GOAL IS CHALKED OFF! That was a sensational finish from Suarez. The Barcelona striker gets on the end of a freekick and lashes home a finish on the volley. The flag was up, though.
56’ CLOSEST WE'VE COME! That was inches away from being the opener for Barcelona. Suarez reacted impulsively to get on the end of a pass through, but he toe pokes just wide.
77’ SO CLOSE! Mina towers over everyone else in the box, getting on the end of a corner kick delivery, but his header bounces just inches wide of the far post. That wasn't far away at all.
92’ ANOTHER BIG SAVE! Suarez gets on the end of a cross into the Getafe penalty area, powering a header towards the target. But Guaita manages to tip the effort over the bar.
