Germany win another title amidst more VAR controversy
Krestovsky Stadium, Confederations Cup final - Chile 0 Germany 1 (Stindl, 20')
Germany defeated Chile 1-0 in the final of the Confederations Cup amidst more controversy over the VAR system.
Chile dominated much of the first half, with their energy and pressure giving them shots in and around the box from the opening stages. Arturo Vidal forced a good save from Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
However, Germany took the lead when a defensive error gave Lars Stindl a simple tap-in, and Chile could not find their way back.

Chile applied more pressure as the game came to a close, throwing on more attacking players in the last 10 minutes, but Germany hung on calmly to claim the title with relative ease save for a super Ter Stegen save from an injury time free kick from Alexis Sanchez.
What is the point of VAR if referees continue to put players in danger? Werner could have had his jaw broken by Jara's elbow, but he received a yellow despite a VAR review. There will rarely be a more obvious red card. VAR should let players know that there is no chance to escape punishment for things like this, but still referees won't send players off for obvious violence.

MAN OF THE MATCH
Joshua Kimmich (Germany): Kimmich has grown into his spot at Bayern Munich, and for Germany, but he is not quite yet assured of regular football for either. For the national side in this match, he was assertive and dangerous around the box, and showed a perceptive side unusual for a player so young.
5' - VIDAL CHANCE - Vidal flicks up a pass inside for Aranguiz to burst onto. He's through on goal, but Mustafi slides in at the last. He turns around and plays it back out for Vidal, and his shot from a tight angle is blocked.
13' - VARGAS SHOT - Vargas has space for a shot outside the box, and he curls a low effort at goal that Ter Stegen leaps to his right to claim.
20' - GOAL! Chile 0-1 Germany. Stindl scores - Pathetic from Chile. Diaz turns to his left, with his back to goal, straight to Werner. Werner skips into the ball and squares it for Stindl, who has an easy tap-in.

55' - DRAXLER SHOT - Kimmich starts a counter, the ball is worked to Draxler on the inside left, and his shot is deflected by Jara, just inches wide of the far post.
65' - VAR - Jara is yelllow carded for an elbow on Werner on the left wing. The VAR is used, the referee looks at him, plainly aiming an elbow into his face. A yellow? A risible decision.
90+5' - SANCHEZ FREE KICK - Sanchez hoiks up his shorts, puffs out his cheeks, and whips a free kick around the wall that Ter Stegen dives brilliantly to pam away.
Germany's squad had an average age of just 24.
