And there's the full-time whistle! Late, late drama, but Villa survive and are heading to Wembley.

Not to be for Boro, who will be ruing that late opportunity - did Villa get away with murder there? And Johnstone in particular??

Nevertheless, it's Aston Villa v Fulham in the final!

The ball is in the Boro half. Just where Villa want it. Now Grealish takes it into the corner, exactly where Villa fans want to see it.

Two. Minutes. To go. Can Villa hold on? Boro throwing everything forward.

Villa make their last change with Bjarnason replacing Adomah.

FOUR minutes added on.

OFF THE BAR! Would you believe it, from the resulting free-kick, Downing's fierce effort cannons off the bar. A huge let-off for Villa.

WOW! Should Johnstone see red here??? The Villa keeper comes out of his area and as Terry heads the ball into the air, Traore shoots - but there is Johnstone to palm it away - OUTSIDE THE AREA. Free-kick to Boro 20 yards out, but should Villa be down to 10 men???

Fabio has time to pick out a cross but it evades Gestede at the back post. Boro have simply no choice but to push on now.

As Villa look to get the job done, they bring on Whelan for Hourihane. Another barrier goes up in front of the Villa defence.

Simplest save of the night for Randolph as Snodgrass' tame effort bobbles into the keeper's grap.

Final throw of the dice from Boro with Fabio on for Shotton.

First sub of the evening for Villa. Like for like as Grabban heads off for Kodjia.

Straight into the wall from Snodgrass... A corner for Villa moments later ends with Bree firing well, well wide.

Snodgrass invites Downing to challenge and goes down under minimal contact. He wins the free-kick and the Villa midfielder might just shoot from here...

SAVE! Patient build-up play from Villa, and Grealish dances past Clayton before whipping a fierce effort towards the far corner, but Randoplh does superbly to get over and palm it away.

  • Rudy Gestede
OffJonathan HowsonMiddlesbroughSecond sub for Boro as Gestede comes on to face his former side. Time to force the issue.

Second sub for Boro as Gestede comes on to face his former side. Time to force the issue.

PENALTY? No says Mike Dean, who waves away protests after Hourihane goes down in the box. He gets ahead of Besic but looks like he actually slips... Boro go on the break but a cross to no one hands Villa a goal-kick.

TIPPED OVER! Grabban looks as though he should have played it wide, but twists, turns and eventually forces Randolph to palm an effort over from distance.

Same change as in the first leg - Bamford on, Assombalonga off. That comes just after Grabban is flagged for offside after appearing to be through on goal.

That Grabban chance...

Another VIlla corner, this time it's Snodgrass to take, but Assombalonga gets his head to it.

Grealish wins a corner and the boys from the back stride forward, but his cross is poor and Boro clear their lines. Just the two shots on target all match, both from Villa.

Fabio and Bamford warming up on the sideline for Boro. Less than half-an-hour to go and the visitors must get a goal to force extra-time at the very least.

SAVE! Fine move from Villa ends with Adomah rolling the ball over for Grabban, but there is Randolh to make a point-blank save. Vital stop to keep the visitors in this one.

Grealish then goes in the book for a late tackle on Traore.

If you can see it... The closest Boro have come!

Grealish protects the ball well as he often does before drawing the foul. A free-kick some 30 yards out for the hosts. Hourihane fancies this one...

He drives it low but it's straight into the wall. Hoping they jumped, I suppose.

Assombalonga wildly protesting for a backpass as Johnstone picks the ball up, but that's a tackle more than a pass. Chester makes a vital interception moments later.

JUST WIDE! Besic takes the ball in his stride 20 yards out and unleashes a low strike. It actually looks as though it flicks off Chester and wide, but a goal-kick is given.

Feel a moment will come when this game bursts into life - that moment is yet to arrive. Pulis must be considering changes.

Boro win an early corner but Mike Dean blows up for a foul and Villa have a free-kick. Looks like Gibson has been penalised for an infringement.

Quiet start to the half - it's only going to get nervier and nervier. At this rate you'd imagine one Villa goal would kill it off, is it worth pushing for that though?

  • 2nd Half

All good? Good. The second half is under way. Villa 45 minutes from Wembley, Boro - obviously - looking to turn this tie upside down. Not sure there are many fingernails left to be chewed in the ground.

  • End of 1st Half

And there's the half-time whistle. Not a classic but it's clear no one wants to make the first mistake. Villa content knowing this scoreline is enough to reach the final. Boro more than in this game though, and they'll fancy their chances of nicking at least a goal - this game is there for the taking.

THREE minutes of added time.

Yellow for Hutton as he drags back Traore out wide. Clear booking that, and now the Boro man stands over the free-kick.

Snodgrass' free-kick is behind most of the players and Boro go on the break with Assombalonga. It's a great run too, and a Terry slip makes for a heart-in-mouth moment for Villa, but across comes Jedinak to make a crucial tackle.

Adomah cuts inside against Shotton and draws the foul from the Boro defender... Free-kick out wide and a chance for the hosts to cross it in.

The edgy, nervy defending continues, this time with Villa just about clearing a Boro corner. There's a big mistake coming in this game, just has that feeling.

WIDE! And there's the first big chance of the game. Boro can't deal with a cross and the loose ball falls to Chester 10 yards out. However, he can't direct his effort on target when striking on the turn.

Downing whips in anothe dangerous ball it's close enough to Johnstone for the Villa keeper to collect it.

Villa go on the counter and Grealish's effort deflects wide for a corner.

A Villa attack is broken up by.... Mike Dean. All by accident of course, but a ball across hits the ref and Boro go on the break. No one is there to meet the cross but they now have a free-kick out wide...

As I say that.... Villa come close to opening the scoring. It's with Adomah out wide and it looks as though his low cross will be tapped in by Hourihane, but there is Friend to clear in the nick of time. Snodgrass then goes in the book for a late challenge. He protests with Mike Dean, but no dice.

Funny old game this. And by funny, I suppose you could say dull. Not a single decent chance yet. Tight affair - and sloppy at that.

Traore showing a flash of what made him so frustrating to Villa fans during his time in the Midlands. He works a yard of space down the wing but sends a cross out for a goal-kick. The Villa supporters ironically cheer is latest failed cross. Only takes one to come good, mind.

Bit of joy for Boro down the left at the moment, and Traore wins a corner for the visitors. Downing goes over to take - former Villa man of course...

It's a good ball in, but Hutton is there to head clear. The travelling fans will be happy with what they've seen so far.

Groans around VIlla Park as a sloppy pass from Terry puts Boro on the front foot, but that soon turns to cheers as Grealish comes in to dispossess. Terry wincing slightly and having a word with Mike Dean - not happy with something.

Villa a bit shaky at the back. Traore gets a good cross in and the hosts cannot clear it properly. After another cross they eventually clear, but it has been a promising opening quarter from Boro - just need to find an opening.

Boro look to cause mayhem with another long throw but Fry is penalised for a push on Hutton and Villa can regroup with a free-kick.

Few chances to report in the early stages at Villa Park. A typically cagey affair given what's on the line. Villa sloppy in possession. Boro struggling with the final ball.

Downing's cross is met by Howson, but he can't direct his header on goal. It in fact heads towards Terry in the middle of the box, who hoofs the ball clear.

Good spell for Boro this. A long throw-in leads to a corner...

  • George Friend
Yellow cardGeorge FriendMiddlesbroughFriend skips past a couple of challenges and charges from the wing into the box. However, he loses control and ends up colliding into Johnstone. He's shown a yellow for going in on the Villa 'keeper, but it's a tad harsh.

Friend skips past a couple of challenges and charges from the wing into the box. However, he loses control and ends up colliding into Johnstone. He's shown a yellow for going in on the Villa 'keeper, but it's a tad harsh.

Hairy moment for Boro at the back as Randolph's clearance is blocked by Hourihane - one of those where it could bounce anywhere, but fortunately for Boro, it's away from goal.

Sherminator taking in the action...

Decent pressure from Villa. Initally a Grealish shot is blocked but eventually they win a corner after Adomah's effort deflects wide.

The corner is taken short and eventually it falls to Bree 25 yards out, but he fires well over...

Snodgrass jogs back on and Villa are back to full strength. He rouses the home fans with another interception on Friend to win the ball back for the hosts.

Boro try and force the issue early on but Snodgrass tracks back before earning a free-kick for the hosts after intercepting Friend.

Slight break in play with Snodgrass receiving some treatment. Looks fine to continue, though.

And we are under way at Villa Park! Who will book a final date with Fulham on May 26?

Ahead of kick-off, a minute's applause rings around the stadium to remember Jlloyd Samuel.

'One Jlloyd Samuel,' chant the home fans. A sad day for the club.

Teams are out - Terry and Gibson lead the two sides out at Villa Park. Do Villa defend their lead or take the game beyond Boro? For the visitors, the plan is somewhat clearer. Moments away from kick-off!

A positive stat for Villa fans - None of the previous 15 second tier-teams to win the first leg of a play-off semi-final (current format) away from home have failed to reach the final, with only six of those teams winning promotion.

Bad hosts - The home team has failed to win any of the last 12 clashes between Middlesbrough and Aston Villa in all competitions, with the Villans being the last side to secure a home victory, in March 2005 in the Premier League (2-0).

Team news - Both teams have made one change. James Bree replaces the injured Ahmed Elmohamady for Aston Villa. Dael Fry comes in for Dani Ayala for the visitors.

So Fulham won 2-0 at Craven Cottage last night to earn a 2-1 aggregate victory over Derby. Fulham finished third in the Championship after final-day heartbreak saw them miss out on the automatic places to Cardiff City. They’ll be favourites heading into the final – which could well suit Villa or Boro heading into that most expensive of showdowns.

And so to the team news...

Aston Villa: Johnstone, Bree, Chester, Terry, Hutton, Snodgrass, Hourihane, Jedinak, Adomah, Grealish, Grabban. Subs: Bunn, Samba, Whelan, Hogan, Onomah, Bjarnason, Kodjia.

Before we carry on, let's not forget the devastating news of Jlloyd Samuel's passing away earlier today following a car crash. The former Aston Villa and Bolton defender was aged just 37, and will be remembered tonight at Villa Park.

Villa said: "We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of our former player Jlloyd Samuel at the age of just 37 in a car accident.

"Our players will wear black armbands as a mark of respect tonight and our thoughts are with his friends and family at this very difficult time."

Evening and welcome along to the second second leg in the Championship play-offs. It’s advantage Aston Villa in the fight to play Fulham at Wembley on May 26 – can Middlesbrough bounce back?
