  • End of 2nd Half

FT: Napoli 2-0 Liverpool. Late goals from Mertens (pen) and Llorente mean Liverpool's defence of the title gets off to a losing start in Group E.

Dries Mertens (Naples) célèbre son but contre Liverpool

Llorente had spoken about wanting revenge for losing the CL final with Spurs - and that's some form of response, though I'm sure he'd rather have the winners' medal.

Big cheers from the home crowd as a Liverpool free kick comes to nothing.

Suddenly the San Paolo explodes with noise. Can Liverpool rescue this and silence the home support?

That's Mertens' fourth goal in four matches and could be the winner.

The check is over. Penalty stands.

PENALTY TO NAPOLI! Robertson on Callejon. VAR checking....

Chance for Mane. He exchanges a slick one-two with Firmino on the left, but can't find enough power in his low shot to truly trouble Meret.

Allan is down with cramp. Play halted for the moment. It's a warm, humid night. Will fresh legs play a decisive factor? Will we have a winner?

It looks like Napoli and Liverpool are both about to make their first changes.

Lozano jinks at van Dijk and looks to take the Reds defender on, but there's only one outcome there. Van Dijk repels the danger.

Liverpool hold a really high line defending a Napoli free kick. A flurry of the home side's players make a late run into the box to try and unlock the Reds, but Adrian is alert and comes way off his line to gather with ease.

VIDEO: Adrian's heroics.

But the hosts push too many forward and the away side break. Mane leads the charge. It's two on one but the Senegal forward overcooks his pass to Salah and a big opportunity is wasted.

Napoli have been the better start in this second half.

Neo... "He's beginning to believe..."

Alisson who? (kidding!)

SAVE! That's a magnificent stop from Adrian. Mertens arrives at the back post to volley Mário Rui's lovely cross towards the goal, but the Reds keeper somehow palms it away.

Lozano takes a knock and needs some treatment. Play halted briefly but he looks like he'll be okay to continue.

Just a 5-1 half time lead for Salzburg against Genk!

  • 2nd Half

KICK OFF! Napoli restart the contest. No changes at the break.

Meanwhile, in Salzburg...

  • End of 1st Half

HT: Napoli 0-0 Liverpool.

CLOSE! Firmino rises to meet Milner's left-wing cross but glances his header just wide.

Liverpool break at speed. Mane feeds Milner after opening things up down the left. The midfielder looks for Salah in the middle but can't quite find him. Super defending.

High praise indeed.

LATEST: Salzburg 3-1 Genk.

Neapel - Liverpool

Someone for these two teams to be aware of when they lock horns with Salzburg later in the Group.

Liverpool have been under a bit of pressure in the last 10 minutes or so. Salah looks to change that as he cuts in from the right, but he drags his 20-yard shot well wide of the near post.

Another goal in Austria and it's the hosts on target once again. Salzburg 3-0 Genk.

ATTEMPTS: Napoli 5-6 Liverpool.

LATEST in Group E: Salzburg 2-0 Genk.

Mertens looks to pull the trigger from 25 yards but Mane tracks back well to make a timely challenge and put the Belgian off.

Trent Alexander-Arnold of Liverpool with Lorenzo Insigne of SSC Napoli during the UEFA Champions League group E match between SSC Napoli and Liverpool FC at Stadio San Paolo on September 17, 2019 in Naples, Italy.

More good play from Mertens. On this occasion he wastes little time teasing a devilish delivery into the box, but Matip is well positioned to nod to safety under pressure.

Dries Mertens threatens down the right with a smart run beyond Robertson. He tries to drift to the byline, but van Dijk steps across and makes an important tackle.

Mohamed Salah face à Mario Rui (Naples-Liverpool)

Salah and Mane combine in the Napoli area to tee up Milner, who can only rake his first-time shot over the top from 20 yards out.

The resulting corner comes to nothing.

Napoli lose the ball deep in their own territory and Liverpool pounce. Henderson clips it over the top for Mane, who sees his controlled drive beaten away by Alex Meret.

Elsewhere in Group E, Salzburg lead 1-0 at home to Genk.

Shouldn't be so surprised this has been so open. Two of Napoli's three Serie A games this season have finished 4-3!

HOME COMFORTS: Napoli have won only four of their last 12 UEFA Champions League matches (D3 L5) – but all those victories have come at the Stadio San Paolo. Indeed, seven of their nine points in the Group stage last term came on home turf.

Liverpool shake in defence once more. Once again Ruiz is given too much space as he meets a right-wing cross at the far post. The midfielder guides a volley back into the six-yard box, but Virgil van Dijk is well placed to hack it to safety.

LFC v ITALIAN OPPONENTS: The Merseysiders have won 13 and lost 12 of their 28 encounters with teams from Italy. The Reds have won only won three times on Italian turf from 12 visits. Those successes? Roma (2001), Inter Milan (2008), Udinese (2012).

And again! Koulibaly is faced by Salah at full pelt, but stands his ground and reads the Liverpool man's bid to nutmeg him. Thou shalt not pass.

Slaha looks to feed Mane as the Senegalese forward charges through the middle. Koulibaly comes across to intercept and then wins a challenge with Firmino before clearing his lines. The Napoli defender has looked rather splendid thus far.

DID YOU KNOW? Liverpool have won four out of their five, first outings in this competition as defending champions. The only setback came in the 2-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest in 1978.

The Reds have made a habit of starting recent Groups on a positive note. Indeed, they are unbeaten in 13 opening group matches in Europe, winning eight times. It is a run that stretches back to 2002 when they lost to Valencia.

Whistles as Liverpool play keep ball to try and manage the game at their own pace. It's been a lively start - very open.

STAT: Liverpool have not won any of the last four away group fixtures, drawing one and losing three.

CLOSE! Fabian Ruiz lets rip with a 20-yard drive that Adrian can only parry. The Napoli man follows up to lash at the rebound but is thwarted by the keeper once more. It's nodded into the net from close range at the third attempt, but the flag is up for offside. Let off for the visitors.

KLOPP v ITALIAN OPPOSITION: The charismatic German has locked horns with Italian opposition on 10 occasions during his time in management. He has had an indifferent time of it, losing six times and winning just four.

Salah almost in again. This time the Egyptian leads a charge from inside his own half after Liverpool cleared a Napoli corner. The hosts look in trouble, but Allan manages to get back and make the tackle after the Egyptian slightly overran it.

Liverpool are first to show. A lovely ball in-behind Mário Rui from Henderson allows Mo Salah to put on the jet-burners. He looks to cut in from the right side of the box, but Kalidou Koulibaly comes across to make an important block.

CARLO v LIVERPOOL: Ancelotti has a bit of previous in the dugout against Liverpool. He has faced the Reds 10 times as a coach, winning six and losing four. He was famously in charge of AC Milan in their Champions League finals against the Merseysiders in 2005 and 2007.

HEAD-TO-HEAD: Liverpool have won four of the matches the sides have played on the European stage. It was a victory apiece last term, but back in the 2010-11 Europa League the Reds were unbeaten. A goalless draw in Naples was followed by a 3-1 victory at Anfield, where Steven Gerrard netted a 15-minute treble.

  • 1st Half

KICK OFF! Liverpool get this Group E clash up and running.

DID YOU KNOW? Liverpool are just three goals short of recording 450 in all competitions under Jurgen Klopp. However, the Reds failed to score on their only two previous trips to the San Paolo.

Kalidou Koulibaly of Napoli is challanged by Mohamed Salah of Liverpool during the Group C match of the UEFA Champions League between SSC Napoli and Liverpool at Stadio San Paolo on October 3, 2018 in Naples, Italy.

The big news for Napoli is that Lorenzo Insigne is fit to start after being an unused substitute during the Partenopei's 2-0 victory over Sampdoria at the weekend. He is one of three changes for Carlo Ancelotti as Allan and Kostas Manolas also come in.

Napoli's Italian forward Lorenzo Insigne (L) opens the scoring during the UEFA Champions League group C football match between Napoli and Liverpool on October 3, 2018 at the San Paolo stadium in Naples.

Liverpool make three changes from the 3-1 win over Newcastle on Saturday. Roberto Firmino starts and in doing so makes his 200th appearance for the Merseysiders. The Brazilian will be playing his 42nd match out of a possible 43 European games under Jurgen Klopp and has netted 16 goals in that time.

The other two changes are in midfield with captain Jordan Henderson and James Milner restored to the line up.

Carlo Ancelotti: "We want to play a starring role, first by reaching the knockout stage and cementing our place as one of Europe's top clubs. We know how good we are and we want to prove it on the international stage."

Fernando Llorente is on the bench tonight for Napoli. He featured as an 82nd minute sub for Spurs in the Champions League final loss to Liverpool last season - and he's keen to make an impact if given the nod having netted twice in five outings against the Reds in the past. He told reporters: " Liverpool's results speak for themselves. I'm still bitter about losing in the final against them last year and I really hope I can settle the score this time around as a Napoli player."

Jurgen Klopp: "Last year, we learned from one game to the next game and we have to use that experience, because if we don't defend with all we have then we have no chance against Napoli. They are so strong. They are stubborn in a positive way. They play football, they break lines, they have good counter-attacks, they are creative. I enjoy it when I analyse Napoli. I like to watch them."

The sides have met four times in Europe, including two encounters at this stage last term. Lorenzo Insigne's last-gasp strike gave the Italians a Matchday 2 success in Naples, while Mo Salah's goal edged the Reds to a 1-0 win at Anfield. That victory on the final night of the Group edged the Merseysiders into the knockout rounds, but it was only achieved thanks to Alisson's last-minute save to deny Arkadiusz Milik. If he had scored, Napoli would have joined PSG in the Last 16 instead of Liverpool. Fine margins and all that...
