World number 20 Kyrgios slipped and fell on the lush grass with the score at 4-4 in the first round of the Aegon Championships against the world number 55 American Young.

Ninth seed Kyrgios already had his right leg strapped up, but looked to take a tough hit on his left knee in collapsing on the ground and needed immediate treatment before finally retiring after losing the first set 7-3 on a tie-break.

After putting his head in his hands and lying on court for a few minutes after the slip, Kyrgios needed a medical time-out in what could yet be recurrence of a recent problematic hip injury.

When he resumed, obviously in some discomfort, he went on to squander two break points before losing the first set 7-3 in a tie-break and then deciding to retire from the contest.

His withdrawal may have just been a precaution with Wimbledon so close, but it was another blow to the 22-year-old, who had been struggling with hip and shoulder problems which had forced him to pull out of the Italian Open.

Wimbledon begins on July 3 with the Australian, who has been blighted by accustations of lacking focus in his short career, awaiting a medical decision on the extent of any damage to see when he can return.
