Fanning reaches last four in Fiji
Australian Mick Fanning booked his place in the semi-finals of the Volcom Fiji Pro before unfavourable winds put an early end to the day’s competition.
The 30-year-old two-times world champion made the most of four-to-six-foot surf in the morning to beat Damien Hobgood and in-form rookie John John Florence as he booked his place in the last four.
“It’s been a good day out here for me,” Fanning said.
“You know, Damien and John John have to be two of the heaviest favourites out here and to get past both of them is a huge confidence boost going into the final rounds.”
Fanning will face 18-year-old Gabriel Medina for a place in the final, after the Brazilian bested Taj Burrow.
“The wind is picking up but there are still some really good waves out there,” Medina said.
“It hasn’t been the best start for me this year so I’m very happy to be in the semi-finals. I love the waves here in Fiji and I hope we get to finish in good surf.”
When competition resumes 11-times reigning world champion Kelly Slater will take on Julian Wilson for a place in the second semi-final, while Adriano de Souza and CJ Hobgood will do battle in the fourth quarter-final.
