ImagoJogia’s match against Selt was due to take place on January 28 as part of the Snooker Shoot-out tournament in Blackpool.
It was alleged that a series of bets placed on Matthew Selt to win the match were suspicious, resulting in betting being suspended on the evening of January 23.
But on January 26 Jogia withdrew from the match, citing injury.
The 36-year-old was provisionally suspended by the sport’s governing body, the World Professional Billards and Snooker Association (WPBSA).
“Joe Jogia was today banned from involvement in the game of snooker and billiards until the conclusion of the 2014 World Championship and ordered to pay £2,000 as a contribution towards the cost of the hearing and investigation of the case,” the WPBSA said in a statement.
A total of 14 bets to a total value of £4,830 were placed on the match, while four bets to total of £2,300 and a bet of an unknown amount were declined.
The WPBSA said in the statement that two people placing the bets were known to Jogia with telephone records demonstrating that the player was in frequent contact with the two men during the period leading up to and following the placing of the bets.
The WPBSA also said that there was no contact between Jogia and the two men before January 16 but a total of 33 text messages and three phone calls took place between Jogia and one of the men, and 42 text messages and one call was between Jogia and the other man.
Jogia “failed to provide a consistent or detailed explanation as to the reason for the contact”, the WPBSA said.
