Wood to face RFU disciplinary panel

Gloucester prop Nick Wood will face a Rugby Football Union disciplinary panel on Wednesday night after being sent off for stamping in Sunday's 44-12 Aviva Premiership defeat at Saracens.

Wood received the second fastest red card in the league's history after stamping twice on the head of openside Jacques Burger just 73 seconds into the match.

Referee Wayne Barnes was left with an easy decision to make and Wood immediately apologised to Burger before sitting in the dugout with his head in his hands.

The top end sanction for stamping is a nine-week suspension and the England Saxons front row is likely to be facing a significant ban, despite his fine disciplinary record.

Gloucester director of rugby Nigel Davies accepted Barnes' decision after the game.

"Nick is not a dirty player and never has been. The red card, as it was seen by the referee, was fair," Davies said.

"Nick's apologised for what happened and has been big enough to do that. He's a good guy and will come back stronger. Everybody makes mistakes."
