A delighted group of 60 Olympic fans got the surprise of their lives ahead of the Games when former Manchester United and England star David Beckham dropped in at the Westfield Stratford City shopping mall.
The fans were enjoying having their photos taken in the Team GB kit in a photo booth when Beckham popped in to give them a surprise. The footballer's unexpected appearance was part of the Take The Stage campaign run by adidas, the Team GB kit suppliers.
Afterwards Beckham commented, "It was a unique experience for me and the people who took part and there were some great reactions when we surprised them in the photo booth. I always love coming back to London and the activity was a great opportunity for me to get involved in the adidas Take The Stage campaign and get behind Team GB."
Some of the fans were simply overwhelmed with joy, schoolboy Christian Lewis and his mum Elaine both bursting into tears when they spotted Beckham.
Meanwhile, reacting to the news that Sir Chris Hoy has been chosen as Team GB’s flag bearer for the opening ceremony Beckham added, "Everyone looks up to him, he’s a great Olympian. He’s a person that has been the best, done the best and achieved the best. He’s someone that everyone is proud of and for him to be carrying the flag it’s a true honour."
