England have escaped with a draw after the post-Rooney era began with a sub-standard display against a handy Slovenia side who could, and probably should, have won the game. Joe Hart was England's best player on the night, while the introduction of Rooney off the bench did little to ignite Gareth Southgate's men. England remain top of Group F, but plenty of questions remain unanswered about the future make-up of this side. Thanks very much for joining us, catch you all next time.

The final whistle goes and the game ends goalless in Slovenia.

93'

Cahill commits a crunching tackle to halt a Slovenia break. He's on a booking and was slightly rash in lunging in, but England remain at their full number.

90'

We're into five minutes of added on time. Can one of these teams nick a winner? The home fans certainly think so and the atmosphere cranks up a notch as they roar their team on.

Slovenia have shown they are a team with a real chance of making it out of this group with their performance tonight. England will still be favourites to top the group, but they won't have it all their own way.

Slovenia make their third and final change as they go in search of a win that would put them in a terrific position in the group.

83'

Lingard draws the first top save out of Oblak with a pile-driver from range. The Manchester United midfielder has flitted about nicely, but that's the first real threat he's offered in the game, taking advantage of time and space to drill in a shot at a saveable height for the talented Atletico keeper.

80'

If England can escape from this game with a point they will be pretty pleased on the balance of play, while a win would be an undeserved steal. These are the sort of games on which foundations for future success are built and hopefully whoever the England manager turns out to be will stick with this tactical approach, but it's been tough to watch at times tonight.

79'

Rooney curls a shot wide from the edge of the box, which never really looked like troubling Oblak but is at least encouraging for the final ten minutes of the game in terms of Rooney finding space in the final third.

77'

Sturridge is played in down the inside right channel, but he goes for goal from an impossible angle rather than looking for a cut-back or a cross towards Rooney at the back stick and it's a comfortable save for Oblak. Walcott wasn't great, neither was Alli, but how Sturridge is still on the pitch after his performance in these 77 minutes is baffling (and, yes, I know this almost guarantees he'll score the winner now, but he's been dire).

76'

Rose is picked out by a brilliant raking pass from Cahill, but he drags his shot into the side-netting.

75'

The pace of the game has dropped slightly, which probably suits England, who have struggled to deal with Slovenia's aggressive attacking game.

72'

Lingard finds Townsend, who tries to pick out Alli at the back stick with a floating cross that fails to find the Spurs man.

70'

England have Hart to thank that the score is still goalless, but their problems have been largely of their own making with some extremely sloppy defending throughout.

69'

Henderson attempts a suicidal back-pass that plays Ilicic in, but the forward's first touch gives him a slightly tricky angle and makes it easier for Hart to make the save.

66'

Stones put Cahill in a heap of trouble with a soft back-header moments ago, but the Chelsea centre-back got his Man City out of trouble with a non-nonsense clearance.

65'

Townsend's direct approach has injected some life into the England display, but a dangerous attack fizzles out when Sturridge ignores the overlapping run of Henderson in favour of a shot, which is blocked.

63'

Townsend goes for goal moments after coming on and draws a save out of Oblak. It was sliding wide, but at least that's attacking intent from a player in a red shirt.

58'

Ilicic drills in a dangerous shot that slides narrowly wide and would likely have beaten Hart.

57'

Lingard fails to notice Rose steaming forward on the overlap and instead tries a worldy cross towards Sturridge that is easily claimed by Oblak. The two England wide players have been largely ineffective in this system today and it would be little surprise if Southgate keeps the system the same but changes the personnel in those positions as the half goes on.

56'
55'

Walker looks to find Walcott and wins his side a corner. England have stepped it up a little after that tricky opening to the half, with Alli getting on the ball more and Henderson occasionally pushing slightly higher up the pitch to support his midfield cohort.

53'

England break and Alli looks to thread the needle with a probing through-ball that only narrowly fails to find the run of Sturridge. That's more like it!

51'

This has been a difficult watch at times for England fans, but it's the sort of game that will be vital in the team's development. Slovenia are posing a real threat, pushing high and challenging England to cope with a much higher level of opposition than they had to deal with last time out. But the movement and shape of the team is, on the whole, good, and you can see what Southgate is trying to do. It's not quite clicking, but it's pleasing to see the coach stick with his starting XI and give them a chance to get used to the style of play he wants.

49'

Hart's back on his feet after clattering the post in the process of making that superb save. England's goalkeeper has been their best player tonight, which wasn't the plan when Southgate and his squad arrived in Slovenia.

47'

Hart makes a point-blank save, but produces an even more stunning stop from the resulting corner as he claws a goalbound header on to the bar and then palms the rebound away with his other hand. That's sensational from the Torino stopper.

46'

Ilicic tears England apart inside the first minute of the half, but turns down a shooting opportunity in favour of a cut-back that fails to reach any of his three waiting team-mates.

Slovenia get the second half underway. Both teams are unchanged... which is a bit of a fillip for Sturridge.

45'

There's no injury time played at the end of the half and the two sets of players head for the tunnel, with England expecting both barrels from their visibly disappointed caretaker boss.

44'

England have dropped off quite dramatically after their opening flurry, and Hart is the only player to have emerged from this 45 minutes without his reputation diminished. Dier has been sloppy, Henderson has sat too deep, Walcott and Lingard have offered nothing, but it is Sturridge who has been the most disappointing, looking a pale imitation of the player he's capable of being.

42'

Walcott finds himself in time and space down the right, but can't take advantage of his rare moment in the spotlight with a disappointing cross that fails to beat the first man.

40'

Cahill's header at the back stick seems destined for the top corner until it hits an unsuspecting defender who was jumping with the centre-back. That's England's most dangerous moment so far, which says a lot.

39'

Walcott has been a mere bystander in this game. One tame shot that posed such little danger that it didn't even make the cut for this commentary is his only involvement of note. Lingard has been little better and Southgate will want a lot more from his wide players.

37'

35'
34'

Lingard tees up Cahill, whose shot takes a deflection on its way wide. The corner delivery from Henderson is poor, however, and Oblak claims with ease.

32'

England's early pace and energy has dissipated and it's been Slovenia who have looked the more likely to take the lead during this opening half-hour.

31'

Dier gives the ball away again, which sums up his display so far. Defensively he's been good tonight so far, but his passing has lacked the quality required at international level... almost as if he's just come back from injury and might be a tad rusty.

  • Daniel Sturridge
Yellow cardDaniel SturridgeEnglandSturridge loses possession and sneaks in a naughty challenge to try and win the ball back. Rooney, Rooney, Rooney comes the cry from the travelling supporters, which I'm sure Southgate will appreciate.

28'

Sturridge runs out of space on the edge of the box so looks for a pass, but he can't find a route through to Walcott and Slovenia break once again.

27'

It's useful for England to have Dier in that deep midfield role. On more than one occasion he's slotted back into defence to cover for a marauding Stones or to add an extra body in the back-line to free up the full-backs. It's the sort of tactical flexibility that England have rarely had in that position of the pitch in recent memory.

Slovenia's Jan Oblak in action with England's Daniel Sturridge
24'

Ilicic gets a shot on the turn horribly wrong, but again it was an attack that came from poor England passing in the final third. This time it was Lingard who gave the ball away following a corner with an aimless dink that left too many of his team-mates out of position.

22'

This is a fascinating game. Slovenia are playing an aggressive game with quick transitions whenever they win the ball, which is troubling England but also leaving space for the visitors to exploit.

  • Eric Dier
Yellow cardEric DierEnglandDier brings down Ilicic on the break and picks up a booking. He got the ball and back in the "good old days" that wouldn't even have been a foul, but the Spurs man caught his opponent going through from behind and most referees would have brandished a yellow for that challenge.

19'

A bouncing ball unintentionally catches the arm of Alli, who gets away with it (much to the derision of the home crowd) before wisely recycling possession to try and deny Slovenia some possession during this strong period for the hosts.

17'
15'

Sturridge goes down in the box looking for a penalty, but he'd played the ball far too far ahead of him and the referee waves his appeals away. Again, a cross would have been the better option, as the Slovenia defence was stretched.

14'

Ilicic's quality is hardly an unknown. The rangy Fiorentina playmaker has lit up Serie A and the Europa League at times over the past few years and is capable of unlocking defences of far higher quality than the England back-line.

12'

Slovenia are growing into the game, with the excellent Ilicic pulling the strings.

10'

Wow. Where to start?! A poor Dier back pass forces Hart to come charging off his line and make a good save, but the England defence completely fail to shut down the danger from there on in and are given a big let-off when Kurtic's shot cannons back off the post with the goalkeeper rooted to the spot. That should have been 1-0 and Dier's defensive mistake was only the first in a string of errors. Southgate is fuming on the touchline.

England team v Slovenia
9'

Sturridge goes for goal from range, but it's a poor effort and sails over the bar. That was a disappointing choice when there were options either side of the lone striker.

7'

Rose looks for a tricky out-ball from left-back and invites pressure on his defence, before Stones compounds the problem by looking to play out from inside his own box. A wayward shot from range lets the England back-four off, but that was a little bit too risky.

5'

England have started the game brightly, with the central midfield trio all heavily involved in implementing a higher tempo than we're used to seeing from the Three Lions.

4'

It's quick and incisive stuff from England, with captain Henderson finding Alli, who turns sublimely and picks out Sturridge with a clever through-ball, but the Liverpool man's first touch is heavy and the chance for a one-on-one goes begging.

2'

Alli does well to turn down a shooting opportunity in favour of a dummy and a sharp pass into the feet of Sturridge, but the striker doesn't get his shot on target when a cross towards the back stick would have been a better option.

England get the game underway, kitted out in their change red shirts and red shorts with blue socks. Slovenia are in their usual sky-blue and white.

19:40
19:40

Henderson proudly leads England out of the tunnel. In two hours' time we'll have more of an idea whether this is a plan that's likely to continue, although Southgate's words before kick-off about moving the ball quickly were encouraging.

19:35

***TEN MINUTES TO KICK-OFF KLAXON***

19:30
19:25

Slovenia will be no strangers to England. The two teams met in the last qualifying campaign, with two excellent Wilshere goals and a late winner from Rooney securing a hard-fought 3-2 away win in June of last year. These aren't opponents who are going to be that easy to break down, so Southgate will want his side to play with a high tempo while making sure to protect the centre-backs from the inevitable counter-attacking threat that will come from the hosts.

19:20

The only other change England have made is bringing in Rose for the injured Bertrand, although it's possible the in-form Tottenham left-back would have been picked to start even if the Southampton defender not left the squad.

19:15

Everybody seems to have had their view on Rooney this week, but Paul Parker hit the nail on the head earlier today:

"It was embarrassing how slow it was, and what he was trying to do in midfield," Parker told Eurosport. "You are trying to tell your children about Rooney, and what a great, fast player he was and then your kid looks at it and says: 'well, I could do that dad'. "

That's spot on. Rooney's pace of passing is just not what England need right now. He's a valuable player to have around (although that's not Parker's view) and can bring a goalscoring touch to the squad, but he shouldn't be a starting striker and he definitely shouldn't be a midfielder in any game of consequence. Against Malta it perhaps made sense given the injury problems England have in that area, but Dier and Henderson is the best fit for the team today.

19:10

19:00

It's been a pretty disastrous few months for England. They've been knocked out of the Euros with arguably the most embarrassing defeat in the country's history, they've lost their manager in a shameful scandal and now they've turned their back on their talismanic captain, leader, legend... etc.

But there is a silver lining.

England have two wins from two in World Cup qualifying and are already pulling clear at the top of Group F. Win tonight and England will be on nine points from nine with two of their trickier games already out of the way. So the future may not be bright, but the light hasn't completely gone out just yet.
