Mario Gomez: 'I turned down Real Madrid'
Mario Gomez claims Real Madrid contacted him this summer, but that he joined Fiorentina for guaranteed first-team football.
The Germany international left Bayern Munich for the Serie A side early in the summer transfer window, but not before Madrid’s new coach Carlo Ancelotti reportedly contacted him.
While rejecting Real for Fiorentina may appear fanciful, Gomez did leave Champions League winners Bayern because he was no longer first-choice.
"Ancelotti was interested," Gomez told the latest edition of Kicker magazine. "I was flattered, because my whole family are fans of Real Madrid.
"I thanked him for his interest and told me advisor that I just wanted to go to Florence.
"For me it was clear - I wanted to keep giving everything again properly and not to just play half the games in a top team and obtain many titles.
"I want to play Sunday, Wednesday, Sunday."
