Terry credits Mourinho chat for Chelsea revival

John Terry has revealed how a pre-season chat with Jose Mourinho revitalised his Chelsea career and made him an indispensable figure for his club once again.

Terry has started every single league game under Mourinho this season – a stark contrast to the 2012-13 campaign when interim manager Rafa Benitez begun to phase him out of the first XI.

But Terry was Mourinho’s captain when leading Chelsea to back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006 and the former England international says having the support of the manager upon his return to the club gave him the confidence he needed.

“The manager was straight with me from day one,” said Terry.

“When Jose came in, after the first week he said, ‘For me, nothing has changed. You’re still top, you can still work and play at the top.’

“He showed faith in me, and to get that arm around you is something everyone needs, even if you are one of the more experienced players in the team.

“At the time the manager spoke about it, I think I needed it and, when I got that from him, it not only made me feel 10ft tall, but it made me want to work even harder for the man in charge.

“It makes you go to that extra level – and I would give everything for the manager.”
