Michel Bastos has announced his intention to leave Lyon after he was publicly criticised by the club’s president.

In an interview with French regional newspaper Le Progres published on Thursday, Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas laid into four of the club’s most senior and highest-paid players - Bastos, Cris, Kim Kallstrom and Aly Cissokho – following a season in which they finished 18 points behind Ligue 1 champions Montpellier.

Aulas said: “I saw a very good Kallstrom at Euro 2012 and I have not seen the same when with us last season. He could have been transferred last winter, we waited.

"Bastos? In two years, it’s the World Cup in Brazil, he will be much better, believe me, Cissokho? It seems that he has changed his agent and that he will get better and they he will go but we have little Dabo with us.”

Bastos, 28, responded on his Twitter account by saying: "I'm sad for the comments made about me.

I never had a problem with the group at any of the teams where I have been.

“I deeply respect the club and I am sad for all of this. If I have a problem, I would prefer to leave rather than make things worse.”

Bastos, who is contracted to Lyon until 2015, scored six goals and created another eight in his 26 league appearances last season.
