Tony Mowbray is facing a midfield crisis ahead of Middlesbrough's FA Cup third-round tie against Shrewsbury.

The Boro boss went into Monday's 3-0 Championship defeat at Blackpool without Nicky Bailey, Julio Arca, Kevin Thomson and Merouane Zemmama, and the quartet are facing a race against time to be fit for the weekend.

In addition, Barry Robson collected his 10th booking of the season at Bloomfield Road and will miss the next two games through suspension.

Asked if he is expecting any respite for the weekend, Mowbray told the club's official website: "I wouldn't hold out much hope.

"It will be touch and go and we are not in a position to gamble with them. I don't think Bails will be ready and Kevin will be touch and go.

"You tend to pick up niggles and strains coming back from injury and maybe next week will be too soon."
