FULL-TIME! Southampton make a winning return to Europe with a comfortable 3-0 victory.
FULL-TIME! Southampton make a winning return to Europe with a comfortable 3-0 victory.
VITESSE SUB: Julian Lelieveld replaces Diks.
Southampton head away a corner delivery. The visitors are looking for an away goal that would give them a little hope for the second leg.
Three added minutes to be played at the end of this match.
The home side are content to keep a hold of the ball. Vitesse chasing shadows at the moment.
Well, we didn't see that one coming. The visitors had been putting Southampton under pressure until Baker made that mistake and gave away the ball in a really dangerous area with Long providing the finish to punish him.
GOAL - Southampton 3-0 Vitesse! Long extends the Saints' lead with a simple tap in from a Juanmi cross after Vitesse's Baker concedes possession in a dangerous position.
Into the last 10 minutes, can Vitesse grab a goal back?
OVER! Vitesse blow their best chance of the match as Southampton fail to deal with Baker's cross, the ball falls to Rashica who gets underneath the shot and powers it well over the bar from inside the penalty area.
The ball just won't stick up top with Pelle being offered little support. Vitesse seeing a lot more of the ball. Still 2-0.
That's full time. Embarrassing for West Ham and Bilic, who started well against Astra but promptly threw the match away with indiscipline and perhaps a lack of fitness. They go into the return leg a manager and potentially several players down.
Those travelling Vitesse fans haven't had too much to shout about so far but they're still making plenty of noise.
Koeman is now on his feet and looks quite unhappy with his team. Southampton haven't looked good since the boss made a double change on the hour mark.
RED CARD! Bilic has been sent off after saying the wrong thing to the referee. Four red cards in five matches for West Ham in this tournament.
SAVE! Southampton's new goalkeeper Stekelenburg has had little to do on his competitive debut but he has to be alert to make an astounding stop when Pantic was played through on goal to maintain the scores at 2-0.
There will be three minutes of added time. Payet is booked after getting involved in a row between Maiga and Alves, with Alves cross for Maiga for a possible dive.
Vitesse are growing into the game now, Southampton going through the motions.
VITESSE SUB: Danilo Pantic replaces Kazaishvili, who had the visitor's best chance of the game on three minutes.
Dandea replaces Boldrin.
West Ham are struggling to hit back, and with a few minutes to go, West Ham might have appeared to have thrown away the game.
West Ham may have squandered a two goal lead but that's unlikely to happen at St Mary's. Southampton are in complete control.
Meanwhile, West Ham have thrown away a two goal lead to Astra...
YELLOW CARD! Long makes an instant impact, running at pace at defenders and draws a foul from Kashia who is booked for his efforts.
GOAL! West Ham 2-2 FC Astra - Ogbonna scores an own goal. A ball in looped into the box, and Ogbonna leaps towards it and it skims off his shin and over Adrian.
SOUTHAMPTON SUBS: Two changes for the home side with Juanmi and Shane Long entering the fray in the place of Tadic and Davis.
YELLOW CARD! Tadic is the second Southampton player of the night to receive a booking after a late tackle.
Cresswell is booked for kicking the ball away. West Ham deal with a corner, and then an Alves cross, and they have a goal kick with Adrian now.
About 12 minutes of normal time for West Ham to hold on.
Southampton manage to clear not one but two corners but Vitesse are back on the ball.
De Amorim is off for Astra, replaced by Florea, and Jarvis replaces Zarate.
Oh, what's this? Vitesse have a corner. Unbelievable.
OVER! Oh dear, Pelle. The striker, who should be full of confidence after his earlier goal, has a chance to make it 3-0 after latching onto a poor clearance but he somehow smashes it well over the bar from 15 yards.
Oxford anticipates a moment of danger with a ball towards the box, and deals with it calmly. At 16, that's impressive.
GOAL! West Ham 2-1 FC Astra. Boldrin scores - he has room for a shot from 25 yards, and fizzes in a strike against the underside of the bar.
Meanwhile, Southampton fans are still in fine voice despite their side's slow start to this second period.
YELLOW CARD! The first booking of the match is shown to Davis for bringing down an opponent from behind.
Southampton will be keen to get straight back onto the attack at the start of this second-half, another goal would surely kill this tie as a contest.
Budescu has a shot from 30 yards with predictable consequences.
We're underway for the second-half, surprisingly no changes for Vitesse.
Oxford, now at centre-back, performs a diving header to concede a corner from a cross, and then Astra win another. Noble clears off the line after a Bodrin shoots, with West Ham risking their position.
The Astra manager is starting to lose it. There's a vague simmer on the pitch right now.
RED CARD! Collins tugs Budescu, making a run forward, and Budescu goes down without reservation, and Collins has put his team at risk for no reason.
Budescu, after revenge, kicks Payet up the backside. He's annoyed by Collins' foul, and also because he's two down. Hughes on Tuttle, not quite, but a memorable one.
Lung rushes out now to deny Zarate, who had just made an excellent run into the box.
Colllins is booked for a challenge on Budescu, a late one rather than a terrible one.
Enache is booked for lashing out at Kouyate in midfield.
GOAL! West Ham 2-0 Astra. Zarate scores - He bursts into the area, using excellent close control, skips past some challenges and then slides into a shot, to put it beneath Lung.
HALF-TIME! Tadic's touch is the last of the first-half.
GOAL - Southampton 2-0 Vitesse! Tadic sends the goalkeeper the wrong way to coolly make it 2-0 to the hosts. Easy.
Elsewhere, Southampton are up 2-0 in their match against Vitesse.
PENALTY! Davis plays a short corner to Mane who is caught in the penalty area as he turns his marker.
A bright start from West Ham, but the danger passes.
I have been surprised by how poor Vitesse have been considering they finished fifth in their domestic league last season. The Chelsea boys haven't impressed much either.
The game gets underway, with no changes noted.
Southampton fans are in fine voice now, singing 'One Ronald Koeman' amongst, ahem, other songs.
Pelle has hardly had a touch of the ball but what does that matter, his touch separates the sides now.
GOAL - Southampton 1-0 Vitesse! There we go, the Saints finally have the lead courtesy of a well taken goal from last season's top goalscorer Pelle who latched onto a fantastic pass from Mane.
SAVE! This time it is Davis who brings out a save from Room as the Northern Ireland star cuts onto his right foot and tries to find the corner but it's comfortable for the goalkeeper in the end.
Clasie, playing in midfield on his competitive debut, tries an ambitious shot from distance but it's blocked. We haven't seen too much of him as of yet.
The referee hasn't blown his whistle too many times so far in the opening 30 minutes and that has allowed the game to flow. No goals as of yet but surely only a matter of time.
That's half time. See you in 15 minutes.
Lung dives to his left to stop a curling effort from Zarate from the edge of the box. West Ham are getting closer again.
Cedric's crossing may have disappointed so far but his attacking threat cannot be questioned. His latest burst forward sees him cut in from the flank before seeing his shot blocked.
Koeman will be relatively pleased with what the lively start his side have made in the opening 24 minutes. All they are lacking is a finishing touch so far.
Budescu takes a shot from well out of the area, and it's straight at Adrian, who manages to stop it.
Zarate fouls Queiros with a nudge that the referee spots, and West Ham will now be happy to get into the first half with a clean sheet.
CHANCE! Vitesse fail to deal with the corner, the ball falls kindly to Wanyama from 12 yards but Room makes a brilliant stop and no one in a Southampton shirt can prod home the rebound. Somehow the score remains 0-0.
There will be three minutes of added time.
Ogbonna goes close to getting his first for West Ham.
Davis finds Mane in a great position on the flank but the forward is unable to play through Pelle in space and Southampton have to settle for another corner.
CHELSEA WATCH: Lewis Baker and Isaiah Brown, both on loan from the Premier League champions, have been relatively quiet so far.
Enache is back on now.
Enache is now down, holding his face after a challenge from Cresswell. He's walking off for a little bit of treatment but should be back on shortly.
The highly rated Cedric has been heavily involved down the channel for Southampton but his crossing has let him down so far, he has overhit two already.
Morais is penalised for a high boot into a stooping Kouyate, and he wins a free kick for West Ham.
The score-line remains at 0-0 with both side having a good chance each.
Maiga is on for Valencia, who is being stretchered off and straight down the tunnel. It may actually be a leg injury
Room in the away goal is called into action for the first time in the match as Davis' corner delivery finds Yoshida unmarked in the penalty area but the centre back can only head straight into the goalkeeper's arms.
Valencia, however, is down and requiring treatment, and now Maiga is warming up. He's not impressed since his move from France.
Reece Burke is warming up for West Ham, and is now on for Joey O'Brien. O'Brien jogs off the pitch, and it doesn't appear to be a serious injury.
Cedric, playing his competitive debut at full back, finds Wanyama with a neat pass on the byline who then sees his attempted cross blocked. Southampton corner.
Adrian comes for another corner, and this time he's able to take the ball without any bother.
Astra win a corner through Budescu on the left wing. Valencia heads away in front of Adrian, who was ready to collect.
Not too much to report at the moment. Southampton are doing a lot of probing around the Vitesse final third without really threatening.
O'Brien finds Valencia on the right, and Astra win the ball back and make it as far as the halfway line before losing the ball again.
Ogbonna has made a good debut so far, being reliable and making some key interventions.
Elsewhere, West Ham are lead by a goal to nil against Astra...
A bright start to the match with Vitesse looking particularly dangerous early on.
Zarate finds Kouyate after a Cresswell clearance. Zarate is the target for a Kouyate pass, but O'Brien is then booked for a foul on Seto.
Payet has a shot, from distance again, and it sails over the bar.
WIDE! Vitesse are inches from taking the lead through Valeri Kazaishvili who sees his shot go agonisingly wide of the left hand post
Astra win a couple of corners in quick succession, then West Ham concede another, and manage to hold Astra off.
GOAL! West Ham 1-0 Astra. Valencia scores - Astra don't deal with the danger of the corner, and fail to properly clear. Payet has the room for a cross, and finds Payet lurking at the back post for Valencia to power with a header down into the goal.
Quieros deflects Cresswell's cross after he stumbles following a pass from Noble.
The ball comes into Teixeira, lurking in the post. He aims a shot for the far corner, and he hits the side netting. The closest chance of the game.
KICK-OFF! Southampton have never played a competitive fixture in the month of July before - there you are.
The 'keeper punches away a pass from Noble, but West Ham retain possession.
Astra attack down the left with Boldrin, and his backheel to Budescu finds the Romanian miles offside.
The ball comes to Zarate after a shot is blocked, and Zarate's shot is deflected just wide of goal.
Payet comes forward, with Zarate and Valencia coming forward. Zarate picks up the ball, finds Valencia, who aims for the byline, and it's bundled behind for a corner on the left.
Astra win a throw on the left hand side. Teixeira is tackled by Kouyate, and the danger passes.
Collins wins the ball of Budescu and starts an attack. Valencia flicks on, and it's cleared. West Ham are starting to dominate.
St Mary's is now packed out and there are only five minutes until Southampton kick off their competitive season.
The corner is cleared, and Astra take it forward with Boldrin, who wins a corner.
Valencia slides in a pass for Kouyate, and they win a corner on the left wing.
Ogbonna finds Collins, who lays off to Noble. He chips the ball up to Zarate, with predictable lack of success.
No clear chances for either side yet. With two legs ahead of them, there's little point risking a goal conceded for a long time yet.
Not too many local players involved then...
Ogbonna clears as far as Budescu, and Astra then attack down the right until the move breaks down, the ball running out for a goal kick.
A tactical update on the match, from Astra's point of view.
After dropping into the third tier and coming close to liquidation, it is great to be a Saints fan once more as the red and white stripes take to the field for the club's first taste of European football in 11 years.
Budescu aims a long ball left, but West Ham claim and Creswell brings the ball forward, and eventually Enache concedes a throw in.
O'Brien takes a throw down the right, and the cross is headed away by Alves, the danger passing.
West Ham have dominated possession so far, with Oxford especially deep.
Alves hoofs away a ball that Valencia was chasing, and Astra quickly win a free kick.
Southampton boss Ronald Koeman knows plenty about the club his side have been paired with in the battle for Europa League qualification - after all, he did work at Vitesse for one season back in 2000. The Saints were among the seeds in the draw so they can count themselves unfortunate to come up against a side that finished fifth in the Eredivise last season. A tough task, no doubt, but Koeman has been impressed with his team’s performances in pre-season and will be pretty confident of getting a good result to bring to Holland on August 6.
Oxford appears to be playing in defensive midfield, and at just 16 that's a risk.
The match gets underway.
Three new signings take their place in Ronald Koeman’s starting eleven - midfielder Jordy Clasie, right back Cedric Soares, and Maarten Stekelenburg in goal are all involved from the start while Cuco Martina and Juanmi are on the bench. There is no place in the squad for Jay Rodriguez who was expected to make an appearance this evening for the first time since 2014.
Jacob is the West Ham expert, so I'll be stealing his views to embed them here throughout the match.
SOUTHAMPTON: Stekelenburg, Cédric, Fonte (c), Yoshida, Targett, Wanyama, Clasie, S. Davis, Tadić, Mané, Pellè. Good evening. Four years ago Southampton were playing in League One but tonight they're back on the continental stage for the first time since 2003 with a Europa League third qualifying match against Dutch side Vitesse at St Mary’s. We have a LIVE commentary of the game with the team news coming right up...
FC Astra are in good form right now, but they are from one of Europe's weaker leagues, so there's little optimism for the neutral who wants an upset.
Debuts for Payet, from Marseille, and Ogbonna, from Juventus, show how much the new television deal has given the mid-table sides the fund to strengthen.
West Have a strong team having done much of their pre-season elsewhere, with reserve teams taking up the slack in other matches. They are strong favourites tonight, as long as they are sharp enough so early in the season.
This is how new West Ham manager Slaven Bilic has decided to reintroduce himself to the British public, in a bold Swastika-defending gambit.
TEAMS: West Ham: Adrian, Cresswell, Oxford, Ogbonna, Collins, O'Brien, Noble, Kouyate, Payet, Valencia, Zarate. Subs: Spiegel, Nolan, Jarvis, Maiga, Poyet, Burke, Samuelsen. /// FC Astra: Lung, Alves, Seto, Enache, Budescu, Morais, Boldrin, Gaman Teixeira, Quieros, De Amorim. Subs: Gavrilas, Florea, Oros, Lovin, Dandea, Alves, Stan.
Hello and welcome to live coverage of the Europa League qualifying game between West Ham and FC Astra.
