1 – Real Madrid

The current holders, and tournament favourites with the bookies too. And that’s in part to a certain Cristiano Ronaldo. The World Player of the Year donned that exact mantle when downing Bayern Munich with a perfect hat-trick. But two were offside! Yes, we know, but when Real and Ronaldo are in the mood – it’s hard to hold back the tide.

With 28 goals in 10 Champions League games, Real are the tournament’s top scorers. Heading to the Bernabeu is perhaps less daunting than travelling to Atletico, Monaco or Juve, but Real will be confident out of outscoring the opposition – and their love affair with the tournament in recent years is what gives them the edge over the other three.

No side has successfully defended the Champions League, but Zinedine Zidane’s side will be expected to end that run. And given that they've overcome Atletico in each of the past three seasons, they will be favourites to overcome their city rivals once more.

2 – Juventus

Juventus have conceded two goals in the Champions League this season. Two goals. In ten matches.

And their home record? All Ws in Serie A this season – they haven’t lost at the Juventus Stadium in any competition since August 2015. And then you have to traipse back to 2012/13 to find the last time they lost at home in the Champions League (2-0 to Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals).

All this means Juventus are favourites in many peoples’ eyes. A defensive masterclass at the Nou Camp on Wednesday night came after a rampant 3-0 victory over Barcelona in the quarter-final first leg. The Italians are desperate to end their 21-year wait for the trophy, and Monaco must be on top form to break the Juve defence in the semis.

3 – Atletico Madrid

Is it fair to say Atletico are the team you would like to avoid the most? Atletico lull sides into a false sense of security and pounce when they are most vulnerable.

Victory over Leicester was nothing flashy, but that doesn’t concern Diego Simeone, and the Argentine will not waiver in his approach no matter who they face in the semis.

Having shipped five goals in the tournament this season, Atletico are second only to Juventus in that regard. The nearly men in two of the past three seasons, it would be foolish to rule out the prospect of them going all the way - but they have to overcome their greatest foes first. Can they dig deep and end their hoodoo in Europe against Real?

Kylian Mbappe of Monaco

4 – Monaco

Fourth in our list, but Monaco are more than just dark horses. The Ligue 1 outfit have shown Europe they are frightened of nobody, possessing a youthful energy which has so far overwhelmed Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund.

And while 18-year-old Kylian Mbappe typifies everything that Monaco are about, the re-emergence of Radamel Falcao on the continental scene has added another dimension to their electrifying game.

Monaco are beatable, having lost twice in the competition this season, but at the Stade Louis II they can hit Juventus where it hurts. With a home tie in the first leg, they will be confident of building a considerable lead but must do so against a defensive-minded Juve.
