Ponzi schemes way to win
Simone Ponzi beat the field in a mass sprint to claim the opening stage of the Tour of Slovenia for Astana.
The young Italian rider dominated the leading group of some twenty riders, and with the help of team-mates Jani Brajkovic and Kevin Seeldraeyers took the line.
“I am delighted with my first win this season,” said 25-year-old Ponzi afterwards. “I want to thank all the team for their really hard work. Jani and Kevin were brilliant; they were with me in the last 20 km and made it possible for me to win this stage. Slovenia is very lucky for me, as last year in Kranj I won my first race as a professional.”
The Italian also takes the blue jersey after claiming an early lead in the four-stage race.
