The start was delayed until 11.30am and the hosts were 36-3 when rain again disrupted proceedings.

The umpires called off the match at 4pm.

Paceman Brett Lee bowled William Porterfield with the first delivery of the day and Ed Joyce heard his stumps rattled on the third. Paul Stirling was caught by Michael Clarke off Pat Cummins for 24, while Niall O’Brien hit 11 no.

Australia had elected to field after winning the toss.

Ireland face Afghanistan in one-day internationals on July 3 and 5 while Australia play Essex on Tuesday before their five-ODI series against England.
